I think the song itself is about a relationship that isn't working, but even though he knows it's not working, it's still hard to just walk away from. He's so in love with her that even though he knows she's bad for him, he can't just quit her. He's in misery to be with her but in misery when he's not with her, and he thinks she's playing with his heart. Specifically, in the first verse, I think he's trying to end it but she won't let him So scared of breaking it but YOU won't let it bend.
And that's why I like the video--if you've ever ended a relationship, you might feel like you've been physically beat up, even if you haven't been. Thanks for the reply, that definitely makes sense! Although their relationship might be flawed, wrong or bad, he wants her. She makes him miserable, hurts him but yet he wants and needs her, loves their relationship. I also think though that she is forcing the issue, he doesn't want to commit, possibly. Alternatively that could mean; if she doesn't react, 'answer' him or do something about them and their relationship, he doesn't want to continue with her and therefore will let go, 'set her free'.
