He is the archetype of political hypocrisy and Southern gentility, a man who acts in an entirely selfish manner. Tom is Heavenly's brother and Boss Finley's oldest child.
He has organized a youth group in support of his father's political aspirations, and is completely loyal to his father in both real life and in political ideology. He does not shy away from what he sees as his filial duties and is happy to beat up Chance on his father's orders.
His squeaky clean public image covers his crime-riddled and troubled personal life; he is a college flunky and has been arrested for drunk driving very recently. George Scudder is a local doctor who operated on Heavenly when she contracted a venereal disease. He is also engaged to marry her, even though she still loves her sweetheart, Chance. She lives lavishly, charging all of her expenses to Boss, but never enjoying the privileges of his public life.
She is kind to Chance, whom she remembers from boyhood, and tries to steer him away from staying in St. Cloud, fearing the dangers that will befall him. The Heckler is precisely that, a heckler, who has been following Boss Finley around and disparaging his political campaign in order to expose his hypocrisy.
She picked up Chance Wayne in Palm Beach—he came to her cabana to administer a papaya cream rub, and something drew them together. She has spent the better part of the last few days in the car with Chance, under the influence of various intoxicants.
Although not a politician, he is popular and influential across several states, and growing increasingly powerful. He recently completed an extremely lucrative deal with the Tidewater Oil Corporation and is wealthy enough to have previously sponsored St.
Boss Finley is about to venture onto the national political stage for the first time and has scheduled a rally on maintaining Southern segregation that will be shown live on national television. Boss Finley is also the patriarch of the Finley family.
In addition to his family, he also provides for his mistress, Miss Lucy. Although his longstanding relationship with her is public knowledge, he still occasionally denies her existence. Boss comes from humble beginnings. At the age of 15, he came as a barefoot hillbilly to St. Like her late mother she is a practicing Catholic, although this frustrates her father. Recently, Heavenly suffered through an awful loss and put on black in mourning.
Although her family attempted to keep her circumstances private, there are rumors throughout St. Cloud that something tragic has happened concerning Heavenly. Cloud, Florida, in hope of reclaiming his former glory—and his former girlfriend—while using the Princess to launch a movie career of his own. As Act I begins, Chance and the Princess are in bed together in their hotel room. The Princess—who uses this name to conceal her identity as Alexandra Del Lago, Movie Star—is sleeping off yet another drunken bender while Chance sips coffee.
George Scudder, the chief of staff at the local hospital and a longtime acquaintance of Chance's, has heard of Chance's return to St. Cloud and stops by the hotel. George asks Chance why he's decided to come back after so many years away, and Chance explains that he wants to see his mother and his old girlfriend, Heavenly Finley, daughter of Boss Finley, the richest man and most powerful politician in town.

The way the content is organized and presented is seamlessly smooth, innovative, and comprehensive. The woman with whom Chance Wayne is obsessed. Heavenly has known Chance for a long time—in fact, her first time having sex was with Chance when she was only fifteen. Perhaps because of this, her father—a hard-hitting racist politician named Boss Finley —has always hated Chance. To make matters worse, when Heavenly last saw Chance, they had unprotected sex and Chance transmitted an STD to her without even mentioning anything about the disease.
