After a public war of words with the show's creator Chuck Lorre, his contract was terminated - and the hunt was on for a replacement actor to keep the show alive until syndication deals kicked in. How much money is he making? That's exactly what they did. Kutcher was on a fishing trip with his father when a call came through: An offer he couldn't refuse.
He said he knew it was a risky move, introducing a new main character to the most popular sitcom on television, nine seasons in. Some might say he improved the show, including being paid multi-millions and having opportunity to profit off syndicated reruns.
Perhaps it makes Kutcher look like a sellout seeing him admit he did Two and a Half Men only because it made him richer. He managed to turn the Walden Schmidt character into something interesting, however, proving he never phones in a role.
Regardless, he did admit in the above interview he never worried much about whether he would carry the weight of the show living or dying. He figured if the show could remain funny, it would still work. And so it did, despite having to endure one big problem that could have rattled other actors.
Fans will recall that Charlie Sheen exited Two and a Half Men in Season 8 , and his character Charlie Harper was subsequently written off the hit sitcom. Fresh off the final episodes going live for his hit Netflix series The Ranch , Kutcher reflected on his Two and a Half Men stint and revealed the Walden character that made it to the screen was not exactly the role that he signed up for. Ashton Kutcher explained on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast that his Two and a Half Men role took a considerable shift from first pitch to live-action, resulting in a noticeable character difference from what Kutcher initially agreed on with the series' co-creator Chuck Lorre.
Apparently, Walden Schmidt was a totally different guy before undergoing a reboot of sorts after Kutcher took the role. Speaking about the situation, Kutcher said:.
I went and met with Chuck Lorre, and he seemed like a really smart guy, and he had an idea for this character that I thought was really interesting, which wasn't the character that I ended up [playing]. I got the script and was like, 'Well, that's not what we talked about.
There was a reason — now, what was it..? Alan Jon Cryer offered a towel and some fresh clothes and, before you knew it, there was Ashton in the buff. Admiring remarks from the cast but pixelation for the audience. Comedy Central got two for the price of one by casting a model-turned-actor. Does this mean Alan beats his new friend in the dating game? Of course not. Alan gets to make the tea, Walden ends up in bed with his sympathetic companions.
